CVAP Training Day 3: What's Your Character?

This day was hard for me. I came from sickness from the past week and I was just recovering now. I missed half of the morning session but was able to catch up in the afternoon. The best part of the day was when Sir Danny, a voice acting director, talked about his experience in directing and gave points on how we can be more effective as voice artists. I was reintroduced to voice characterization. I thought dubbing was just mere having different voices but he said that most of the VO now have beautiful voices but don’t know to characterize them. I was in discovery moment because I don’t know about this. I probably knew about the idea but I already forgot this.

... most of the VO now have beautiful voices but don’t know to characterize them
He mentioned the realities of the industry and I must say now that I think I have a pretty grounded impression on the industry because of this. I don’t expect much of the industry. I don’t expect friendly people but I expect that this industry is my platform. I also appreciate people like him and Sir Choi more for choosing to share what they know. I like what he said that the renown people internationally are those people who love and embody their culture as Filipinos. These are the topics that make me come alive – culture, stories, and place. It’s like revising the past. I know in my heart that I am proud of being a Filipino but I also realized that whenever I do things like practicing my tongue twisters, I usually practice the English ones. I think this is the time I practice Filipino and read more Filipino books to share to others as well. I should write more in Filipino too!

Sir Choi said, “True success is through self expression.” I say, “Freedom is self expression.”

I realized as well that we are our individual characters in our stories. But as I embark on this VO journey and encounter different stories by different people, as an artist, I have to see myself in those stories. I have to give my all- my full emotion and what the character requires because it is a chance to express the side of myself that I have a hard time expressing. It is what art is for. And Sir Choi said, “True success is through self expression.” I say, “Freedom is self expression.”
