Unveiling the Art of Dubbing: Insights from Director Papa Neil

In the world of dubbing, few figures are as revered and influential as Neil Ericson Tolentino, affectionately known as "Papa Neil." A man of many talents, Papa Neil has made his mark as a dubbing director, actor, theater director, writer, scriptwriter, makeup artist, production designer, and artistic consultant. His journey into the world of dubbing is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the power of mentorship.

Neil's foray into dubbing began as a twist of fate. Struggling to make ends meet and provide for his family, he turned to a friend, Danny "Ama" Mandia, to borrow money to buy milk for his child. Little did he know that this simple request would lead him into the world of dubbing. Ama introduced Neil to the ABS Studio, and he was thrust into the world of dubbing, initially reluctant as he didn't consider himself a natural fit for the profession.

After leaving the dubbing world, Neil was later asked by Roni Abario, a friend, to return and write scripts for dubbing. Neil, juggling family life and studies as a Mass Communication student at Far Eastern University (FEU), saw an opportunity to support his family. He wrote scripts, including "Pollyanna," and soon ventured into writing for telenovelas, such as "Maria Mercedes", "Kassandra," and "Ilusiones."

His big break came when he was offered the opportunity to dub the hit series "Marimar." Neil voiced the characters Esteban, Arturo, and Ulises, marking his entry into the dubbing world as a writer and voice actor.

In 1998, Neil took a significant step forward when he began directing, thanks to the guidance of Millete Santos Mortiz, the sister of Charo Santos and the wife of director Bobot Mortiz. He directed "Fortune Quest" and eventually directed "Daniel's Diary."

However, Neil's journey took an even more transformative turn when he became involved with Pocholo Gonzales and Creativoices. Pocholo, who had left the industry and returned to share his expertise, asked Neil to join him in launching the Voiceworx program. Neil accepted the opportunity, believing in Pocholo's vision. This marked the beginning of his 17-year (and counting) association with Creativoices.

Within Creativoices, Neil found a platform to teach, mentor, and nurture new talents in the industry. Many of his students have gone on to become acclaimed writers, voice actors, and directors. Neil's keen eye for talent has helped produce some of the industry's finest professionals.

Throughout his career, Neil has directed various notable projects, including the first Koreanovela, "Sunshine of Love," "Lovers in Paris," "Zoro," "Rubi," "The Twilight Saga," and international hits like "Pangako Sayo," "Magpahanggang Wakas," and "Two Wives."

Despite his remarkable success, Neil's journey has not been without its challenges. He acknowledges the shift in the industry, where ambition sometimes overshadows humanity. He values a harmonious and cooperative working environment and remains committed to doing good things for people.

To aspiring individuals seeking a career in the industry, Neil offers sage advice: "Mag-aral kayo" (Study). He encourages those interested to give it a try and, if it doesn't work out, to explore other avenues. Neil emphasizes the importance of honing one's talents continually and maintaining a positive attitude.

In parting words, Neil urges everyone to remember their roots and the people who have influenced their journey. He encourages industry veterans to continue nurturing new talents, as the industry depends on fresh faces and new blood to thrive. In the ever-evolving world of dubbing, Neil Ericson Tolentino, Papa Neil, remains a guiding light and a source of inspiration for all who aspire to excel in this creative realm.
